Frozen Soil Density Measurement Apparatus

I.Purpose and Scope of Application

The combined testing method is applicable to sandy soils and layered,network-structured clayey frozen soils.

II.Test Procedure

1.Place the draining cylinder on the electronic scale and tighten the siphon tube stop clamp.The position of the drain cylinder on the electronic scale must not be moved during the test.

2.Slowly pour near-0°C clean water into the draining cylinder until the water level exceeds the top of the siphon tube.

3.Loosen the siphon tube stop clamp,allowing the water level in the draining cylinder to gradually decrease.Once the water level stabilizes and no more water flows from the siphon tube,tighten the stop clamp and weigh the draining cylinder and the water.

4.Gently place the frozen soil sample into the draining cylinder,then immediately loosen the stop clamp to allow the water in the draining cylinder to flow into the measuring cylinder.

5.After the water flow stops,tighten the stop clamp and immediately weigh the draining cylinder,water,and sample.Simultaneously measure the volume of water in the measuring cylinder to verify the volume of the frozen soil sample.

6.Allow the frozen soil sample to fully thaw and become loose in the draining cylinder,then add clean water until the water level exceeds the top of the siphon tube.

7.Loosen the water-stop clamp to drain the water.After the water flow stops,tighten the water-stop clamp and weigh the drain cylinder,water,and soil particles.

8.During the test,the water surface should be kept stable.The drain cylinder should not shake violently up and down when draining water and placing the frozen soil sample.
